| Self-taught painter and illustrator of horses, cowboys, rodeos and other Western subjects, Barbara Vaupel was born August 17, 1939, in San Diego, California, growing up there and nearby La Mesa, where she lived until 1966. After experience as an in-house advertising artist for a furniture store in 1961-1962, and copy editor in classified advertising at the San Diego Union Tribune, in 1965-1968, she decided to be an artist.
