| A painter of Latin American native peoples, Caroline Van Evera was born February 6, 1889, in Marquette, Michigan, growing up there. In 1908-1909, she studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, and, in 1917-1918, at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. From 1922, for the next seventeen years, she lived in California and Utah, briefly in New Mexico, studying in Woodstock, New York with John Carlson in the summer of 1924.
