Much of the following was adopted from an interview with painter John Carrol Hooper conducted by Pat Schaelchlin at the La Jolla, California Historical Society
A native of Belgium, grandson of noted Flemish sculptor Victor Ven, and nephew of Emile Verhaeren, the famous Belgian author, Carolus Verhaeren received his early art training in London and later in Canada, before coming to the United States and to Southern California.
