This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Canadian born and living in Vermont, Claire Van Vliet has a passion for understanding the natural world, and finds that drawing with ink and pencil and lithograph engraving of those subjects are conducive to that understanding. The artists seeks out rock formations on her travels

As a child she lived in England and at age 14 moved to San Diego followed by a move in her mid 20s to the East Coast.  In 1952, she graduated from San Diego State University and in 1954, earned an M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate University.

After finishing graduate school, she began working with wood engravings, publishing a book of them in 1955 from her publishing company, Janus Press.  Since that time she has won recognition for book arts including a five-year MacArthur Prize Fellowship and election to the National Academy of Design.  From February 21 to April 29, the Grolier Club of New York City hosted an exhibition in her honor titled: "Claire Van Vliet & the Janus Press: 50 Years".
