Duane Van Vechten, the subject of the present work, a portrait by Nicolai Fechin, was an integral
figure in Taos in the first half of the twentieth century, both as an
artist and as an influential patron. She was the foster daughter of the
prominent Chicago banker, Ralph Van Vechten and niece of Carl Van
Vechten, a writer, artist and noted music and drama critic for The New York Times.
Carl Van Vechten was a patron of the Harlem Renaissance and became involved with
