Biography from AskART:
| | Born in Ratisbon, Bavaria on April 6, 1809. At age 19 Vischer immigrated to Mexico where he was the American Consul in Acapulco and was affiliated with a trading company in Mexico City. He came to San Francisco in 1842 as an agent for the Mexican firm and returned to live there in 1849. After establishing a prosperous import business, he built a unique home on Nob Hill at Pine and Stockton. Covering several acres, it was a replica of a charming Bavarian village consisting of four cottages with terraces and its own artesian well. Vischer began sketching as a hobby; his drawings were used to illustrate three books which he authored: Mammoth Tree Grove (1862), Pictorial of California (1870), and Missions of Upper California (1872). Vischer died on Christmas Eve 1878. His sketches are rare and of historical importance.
