This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following biographical data is from Sarah Hechavarria, great grand daughter of the artist.
Parents of artist: Diantha Angeline Lord Kilgore (mother) b. May 6, 1830 Bartle N.H., d. June 21, 1867 Henry White Warren (father) b. April 1, 1831 Williamsburg, MA , d. July 23, 1912 in Denver Colorado. They were married 1855.
Carrie Warren b. 1856 Henry Mather Warren b. Oct 15, 1858 (brother) Ellen Russell Warren (Van Pelt) b. April 8, 1860 (the artist)
When her mother died in 1867, an aunt may have helped raise her.
Ellen Russell Warren (aka Ellen Warren Van Pelt) was sent to Paris to study art, probably between 1880 and 1885 likely at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Ellen's father, by then Bishop Henry White Warren, married Elizabeth Fraser Iliff (aka as The Widow Iliff ) on Dec 27, 1883. Details of the children arising from this marriage are not documented, but it is thought there were one or two who would have been Ellen Russell Warren Van Pelt's half- or step-siblings.
Ellen Ruselll Warren married John Robert Van Pelt Sr. (who was born Nov 10, 1862 in Shelby County Kentucky and d. March 27, 1962) in 1893. They had a son, Henry Warren Van Pelt born November 6, 1894 and died Oct 20, 1947, and a second son John Robert Van Pelt Jr. born in Denver, Colorado April 2, 1896/ d. 1991.
Ellen R. Warren Van Pelt d. January 26, 1946 Hartford CT at age 88.
Paintings in the family include: 1. Self- portrait - date unknown. 2. Portrait of artist's husband, John Robert Van Pelt Senior, (older man looking down) -exact date unknown but likely circa 1910-1920. 3. Portrait of artist's son, John Robert Van Pelt Jr, (or possibly her other son Henry) circa 1930.
The above are currently owned by Richard Warren Van Pelt (cc'd).
Other paintings include: Canterbury Pilgrims painting based on Balke's Canterbury Pilgrim engraving and mural. Date unknown. (per letter JR Van Pelt to me 1987). Location not confirmed.
Oil Portrait of Carrie Warren Frizzelle, the artist's sister, when CWF in her 80's; as CWF born 1856 this would be circa 1940.
Painting of Carrie Warren, probably 1875 to 1880 (per notations on back of photo from JR Van Pelt circa 1987). There is some thought this portrait (with hat ) may be a self-portrait and possibly dated later after her formal schooling.
Painting of the original Van Pelt cottage in Eagle Harbor, Michigan, date unknown .
Painting of a small painting of a street scene, perhaps in Paris, very small and dark, artist would need to be confirmed.
