| Born in Bangor, ME on March 29, 1850. Van Winkle moved to California with her family in 1859 and settled on a farm in Ferndale. She was educated at the Swendsteiner Seminary, the first young ladie's finishing school in San Francisco. She then maintained a studio in Ferndale in the Gilt Edge Bldg where she taught paper-flower making as well as crayon and pencil drawing. In 1888 she returned to San Francisco and enrolled at the School of Design where she was well-trained by Joullin, Yelland, a (showing 500 of 857 characters). |
