Born in Oakland, California the daughter of artists Mabel Eadon and Manuel Valencia. Ethel was raised in an artist milieu and taught to paint by her parents when quite young.  She continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts, California College of Arts and Crafts, San Jose State College, University of California Extension, and with George Post and Charles Horton.  A longtime resident of Fremont, California and the widow of Dr. Eugene Grau, she died on July 26, 1988.

Her work consists mainly of early California historical subjects.  During her last years she painted a series of Mother Lode watercolors.

Exhibited: San Francisco Art Ass’n; Hayward Art Ass’n; California Watercolor Society; Oakland Museum, 1949, 1951, 1958; Madonna Festival (Los Angeles), 1958; Livermore Art Ass’n, 1958 (solo). Works held: Washington Hospital (Fremont).

Ethel Valencia Grau (1901-1988) California Painter Impressionist

Ethel Grau Valencia was born in Oakland, California on April 21, 1901.  She was raised in an artist millieu, and taught to paint at an early age by her famous artist parents, Mabel Eadon and Manuel Valencia.  She continued her studies at the California School of Fine Art and the College of Arts and Crafts.  She also studied at San Jose State College and at the University of California Extension.  She had private lessons with George Post and Charles Horton.

Grau was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, California Watercolor Society, and a Charter member of the Hayward Art Association. She exhibited in those venues and at the Oakland Museum of Art, the Madonna Festival in Los Angeles, and with the Livermore Art Association.

Grau specialized in watercolor images of historical California landmarks.  During her last years she focused on a series of painting bringing attention to the Mother Lode.  Grau was a long time resident of Fremont, California.  The widow of Dr. Eugene Grau, she died in Concord, California on July 26, 1988.
