Hendrick van Balen I was a Flemish painter. He also worked on stained glass windows and as a decorator of Flemish furniture.
His father was an oil and candle merchant, but Van Balen acquired nonetheless a good education, learning from the books that were available in the shop. According to Carel van Mander, he was trained by Adam van Noort (c.1561-1641), but other biographers mention Martin de Vos (c.1532-1603). Amongst his pupils were Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), Gerhard Seghers (1591- (showing 500 of 1767 characters). |
