This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Henry Van Notti was born in Lugano, Switzerland. He studied at the academy of Fine Arts in Turin, and in Milan, Italy. At the age of 20 he completed his degree and took a position as Art Director in the Swiss school system.
He came to the US in 1903 and settled in Weehawken, NJ where he remained until his death in 1962. Most of his oils were done from the Jersey side of the river looking at the New York skyline in its many variations of light. He painted similar scenes in early morning, afternoon and late day. His etchings, however, were mainly done in NYC.
He was an active participant in the National Public Works Program and painted murals in public buildings such as the New York Court House in Foley Square. He earned a living as a scenic artist for theaters.
