This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in Chicago, Illinois, James Valerio has remained a life-long resident there and is both a well-known landscape, figure, and portrait painter and art professor, teaching at Northwestern University in Evanston.
He uses both oil and pencil in a style that is realist and meticulous. It is also a style that goes against the grain of prevalent modernism and conceptualism, which he regards as "based more on theory that technical skill."
