Jean Verdier was born in Paris in 1889. He came from a family of distinguished painters, military and church leaders. Naturally his early influences and interests were of painting and teaching. He was named after his uncle, His Eminence Jean Cardinal Verdier, Cardinal-Archbishop of Paris.
From 1904 to 1913, he studied successively at he Ecole d’Art Applique, the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. During his years of study from 1909-1913, he received four Diplomas of Professor of Drawing, qualifying him to teach art at a college level.

During World War I, he dedicated himself to the military temporarily leaving his art. His war record was distinguished, and he was honored with the Croix de Guerre and the Military Medal. Despite serious war injuries, he resumed his teaching and held a succession of professorships from 1916 to 1945.

Many of Verdier’s students credit him with a large measure of their success as painters, however it is as an artist that he is best known. He exhibited with the Salon de Mutiles de Guerre, the Salon Violet in which he won a Silver Medal and the Salon des Artistes Francais.

Verdier’s objective as a painter was to create pure beauty on the canvas as he turned to nature, specifically flowers, for both his inspiration and subject matter. Showing great detail and variety in the color tones and shapes found in his petals, leaves and flower stems, he was thought of as a realist. However, he can also be considered an impressionist at heart. At first glance one feels the mood of his paintings and only later becomes intrigued by the myriad details combined into one small arrangement.
