John Vanderlyn Jr. (1805-1876).
Born in Kingston, NY, John Vanderlyn Jr. was named after his illustrious and ambitious uncle John Vanderlyn (1775-1852), the first American artist to formally study art in Paris and to pass the rigorous ecole-des-beaux-arts examinations in 1798. The uncle thus became the first American to achieve Academician status in France's National Institute. In contrast to his career-driven uncle, nephew John vacillated in choosing a career.
