This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is from Ingrid Keltz, Miami, FL. The artist is the great great grand father to her husband.

Joseph was born on December 21, 1818, (Source: funeral card, John Corley - great grandson) in either Tennessee or Georgia, not sure which. He died May 2, 1893 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. (Source: same as above.) He is buried at Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia.

Joseph was married to Violettie Mackey (AKA Lettie Morton) on January 23, 1969 in Davidson County, Tennessee. (Source: marriage record).

They had two children, Violettie Van Stavoren, born October 5, 1881 in Atlanta, Georgia, and Ludo Van Stavoren, born July 22, 1903 in Atlanta.

We believe Joseph was married also to Bula D. Willetts on September 11, 1850 in Berrien, Michigan. We do not know if there were any children from that marriage.

In 1889 and 1890, Joseph was living with James D. Van Stavoren on Fraser in Atlanta, GA. James was a photographer and Joseph was a portrait painter. We believe James was a relative of Joseph and they were working together, though at this time we do not know how James was related.

Van Stavoren was in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1845 to 1846; Niles, Michigan from 1851; and Atlanta, Georgia from 1877 to 1893. His portrait of Alexis Coquillart of South Bend, Indiana, completed 1847, is at Notre Dame University.
