Biography from Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art:
| | (Bio by unknown author) Colorado artist, etcher, lithographer and architect, Lester Varian (1881-1967). Colorado mining towns were one of Varian's favorite subjects. A native of Denver, Varian was the son of noted local architect, Ernest Phillip Varian, who encouraged his son in his study of architecture and the fine arts. Following graduation from Denver's West High School, Lester studied at the Pratt Institute of Architecture and Barber's Beaux-Arts Atelier (both in New York City), subsequently apprenticing under the famous architect, Chifflot, in Paris, France. Returning to Denver, Lester formed the architectural firm of Varian and Varian with his father in 1910. He became equally known for his etchings and lithographs of Colorado cities and towns and the landscape surrounding them. During the 1930s Varian joined the WPA Federal Artists Project. His etchings were acquired by the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, the Denver Art Museum, and other collections. He also taught etching at DU. |
