This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| A landscape painter, Mary Vawter was the first wife of painter Will Vawter. She studied in Baltimore and at the Art Students League. She was an accomplished poet and a great fan of poet James Riley whom she came to Indiana to meet and hopefully marry. But instead she married his friend, Will Vawter in 1906, and the couple moved to Brown County, Indiana and renovated a farm which they both tended. However, they divorced in 1923.
She exhibited at the Hoosier Salon and at the J.P. Speed Museum.
