Richard Van Buren was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1937. He studied at the San Francisco State College, the University of Mexico and Mexico City College in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Van Buren had his first solo exhibition at the New Mission Gallery in San Francisco in 1961. He relocated to New York in the mid-1960s and was included in the seminal exhibition Primary Structures at the Jewish Museum in 1966.
