| | Born in Muskegon, MI on May 25, 1904. “Si” Vanderlaan grew up in Grand Rapids and moved to Chicago in the 1920s where he studied at the AIC and Academy of Fine Arts. He did theater posters for Chicago and Grand Rapids theaters until moving to Los Angeles in 1933. He further studied there at the Art Center School and Chouinard Art Institute. For 19 years he taught at Woodbury University.
