This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted May 2005, is from Linda Stamm of Winter Associates. She writes that "much of the information was found in scrapbook clippings whose source and dates are unknown. One clipping was from "Long Island Soundings", date unknown, entitled "Meet the Artist".

After serving in the Navy, Stephen Voorhies attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, graduating in 1922. He resided in Rockville Centre, Long Island, but also maintained a studio at 303 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. He painted numerous views of Nassau County and Long Island and was active in the Art League of Nassau County including serving as its President. His wife, Dorothy, was a fashion designer and they had two children, Barbara Anne and Ruth.

He worked as a free-lance illustrator for publishing houses creating book cover and page illustrations for Harper and Brothers; Funk and Wagnalls; Whittlesey House/McGraw Hill, etc. He created advertising illustrations for the phone company's "Telephone Review", for transportation lines, banks, etc. as well as a Fortune and Liberty magazine covers.

He created three murals for the 1939 World's Fair entitled "This is Long Island", and numerous maps of the New York area including parks, campgrounds, the subway system, Brooklyn, etc.
