| | Born in New Brunswick, NJ on July 19, 1842. Van Dyke arrived in California in 1875 and first settled in San Diego where he wrote for the Union. In 1895 he moved to Los Angeles as a writer-illustrator for the Times and Land of Sunshine magazine.
