| While the majority of Van Stein's works are painted on location in daylight, his forte is nightscapes. His nocturnes are painted on location, en plein air, and focus on urban settings capturing the color and mood of a nocturnal world inundated with man's imposed illumination.
Van Stein is a seventeen-year member of the O.A.K. Group, an environmentally conscious group of Santa Barbara- based artists. He is also an Artist Member of the California Art Club and a member of Oil Painters of America.
