William Joseph Verdult, who calls himself the “Dutch Master”, was born
April 7, 1939 in Putte, Netherlands on the Belgium-Holland
border. Born during German’s occupation of his country, he spent
the first two years of his life in a hospital. Throughout his
early years he suffered from small-pox, and rheumatic fever.
Self- taught he started painting around this time. In 1950 at the
age of eleven he moved with his family to America and spent his youth
in North Dakota. His years in the Dakotas helped define some of
his works today. Later his family moved to Long Island New
York. Though a bright student, he had little interest in
school. To help his family, he at age sixteen, went to work
in a machinist factory. After work William spent most of his time
in Time Square, New York drawing, painting, watching and studying
people of all colors and nationalities.
In 1960, at 21, William and his family moved to California and Newport Beach-Balboa Island became home.
Within a year he had sold his paintings in Newport, Palm Springs,
Laguna and Los Angeles, California. Awarded “Artist of the Year”
by the Costa Mesa Art League, nearly 35 years later he has works that
are still displayed in Costa Mesa.
While exhibiting his work at the Catalina Island Exhibit and at the
Laguna Art Festival in California, he caught the attention of Peter
Paul Ott, sculptor whom he studied under. Afterwards he studied with
Stanley Brooks and Danny Garcia at the Carmel School of Art. He
taught at the school as well. In 1967, he opened his own gallery
in Carmel, California.
From 1968 through 1977 as a tireless painter known for his 3 am start
time, his career took off. Incorporating classical, traditional,
modern, avant-garde in his style, art lovers, celebrities, and
investors were drawn to his work.
During this period, he opened galleries in Hawaii, Palm Beach, Florida, Laguna Beach, and Palm Springs California.
After nearly 20 years of work he completed his rendition of King Tut
Treasures including in his paintings, gold, diamonds, and precious
stones.
Though his exhibits and showings are too lengthy to list they include
headliner exhibits and showings of the Tut Collection and other works
at the Sahara, Sands, Sundance and Marina hotels in Las Vegas, as well
as five star establishments in San Francisco, Corona Del Mar, and
Beverly Hills Hollywood California, Atlanta, Hawaii, Florida and Texas.
Today seven pieces of the Tut 53 piece jeweled collection is on display
at the Tanglewood Resort in Texas.
Though William did not follow the traditional museum route in
displaying and promoting his works, his art followers and personal
friends include a list of whose who in Hollywood highlighted by his
close friendship with Telly Savalas. Some collectors of his work
include: Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Elvis Presley, Jack Lord, Farrah
Fawcett, Telly Savalas, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Lee Majors, Alfred Hitchcock,
