This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Arietta Wagner was born in 1852 at Dickinson's Landing, Stormont County, Ontario, Canada, just outside Osnabruck. Her father was Daniel Wagner (1809-1885), who was born at Dickinson's Landing. Her mother was Eliza Hawley (1812-1898), a native of New York.  Arietta's brothers and sisters were: Ira (1848-1862), Imogene (1850-1834), William Wallace (1854-1912) and Delia (b.1856 and died in infancy).

Eliza Hawley Wagner was Daniel's second wife. His first wife was Eliza's sister, Rhoda Juliet Hawley (c.1814-1843). Arietta's half siblings from Rhoda were: Famah "Fannie" (1833-1937), Ellen Mary (1837-1882), Juliet (b.1839), John Henry (1835-1908), Robert (1840-1894) and Agnes (1841-1919).

Arietta moved with her family from Dickinson's Landing to Vernon Center, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, in 1859. During the Dakota Indian wars, the family moved to Mankato, where Daniel was an insurance and real estate businessman. Arietta taught music and maintained an art studio in her home. She kept a makeshift firing studio in the dark and damp basement of the Mankato Post Office because it was the only commercial building in town with gas.

Arietta and her mother left Mankato following her father's death for Los Angeles in 1889 to be with her sister, Imogene, and mother. Imogene was living in Los Angeles with her mother and husband, George Lidgerwood, and family.

A china painter, a popular art form of the era, Arietta opened a studio at her home at 123 W. 35th Street and later at 2819 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles. She also worked in water colors. In 1900, she won a prize for her work at the California State Fair.

By 1910, she was living with George and Imogene Lidgerwood and their two children at 2622 Romeo in Los Angeles.

Arietta exhibited the works of other artists in her studio, including her sister-in-law, Mary Leicester Hornibrook Wagner (wife of Robert Wagner).

Mary L. Wagner exhibited work in china and miniature painting at the Alaska-Yukon Pacific Expo in Seattle in 1909. She was also a judge at the Paris Ceramic Art Exhibition in 1900.

Arietta died in 1924.

Researched, written and submitted by Rob Wagner, great, great nephew of Arietta Wagner. He credits Keramic Studio magazine for some of his information.
