Born in Sweden and trained in Paris, Adolph Wertmuller became a painter of portraits and mythological subjects.  He painted in the Neo-Classic tradition with mirror-like finishes on his paintings, giving no evidence of his own personality.

He first gained prominence in Europe where he was elected an academician at the Royal Academies of both France and Sweden.  In 1794, he came to the United States briefly and then returned in 1800 after his family lost their money during (showing 500 of 2238 characters).
