A scientific illustrator, known for her accuracy and drawing precision, she also gained considerable recognition through her book illustrations, most notably as the successor of  Aubrey Beardsley for the illustrations of the last two volumes of Bon-Mots.

Alice Bolingbroke Woodward was born in London as the fourth of seven children of scientist and Keeper of Geology at the Natural History Museum Henry Bolingbroke  Woodward (1832-1901).

Being taught at home by governesses, the children were encouraged in their scientific and artistic pursuits, with the girls in the family becoming artists and the boys becoming scientists.

Alice created illustrations for her father's lectures and papers of his scientific associates in her late teenage years already, earning sufficient money to continue studying at the South Kensington School (Royal College of Art).  She continued at the Westminster Art School, and then at the Académie Julian in Paris, France.

She is included in: British Artists 1880-1940 - Antique Collectors' club research project, with over 41,000 artists listed, compiled by J. Johnson and A. Greutzner' for exhibitions of her work from 1885 - 1909 which includes the Royal Academy of Art.
