Born in Greeenridge, Missouri, Alice Beach Winter was a painter, sculptor, and illustrator and was especially known for her child portraits and illustration genre for children's magazines. She was raised in St. Louis and was a student for six years at the St. Louis School of Fine Art, where she received high honors. She also studied for one year at the Art Students League in New York with John Twachtman, Joseph DeCamp, and George deForest Brush.
