Biography from AskART:
| The following, submitted December 2005, is from the artist.
I began painting in watercolors when my children were young and I
helped their teachers with bulletin boards in watercolor for the
classroom. With two years of pre-med behind me, I decided to go
back to college studying graphic design. I discovered oils and
etching in my classes and wanted to push all of the mediums in my work.
After I earned a BA in Graphic Design from the University of Maryland,
Baltimore County, I worked in Graphic Design for two and one-half years
and loved the processes but hated the lack of creativity afforded
me. A gallery where I took my paintings for framing asked me if I
could put together enough work for a solo exhibit. I jumped at
the opportunity and worked all that year on painting. I sold
three-fourths of the paintings of the show and realized the future that
I wanted to pursue.
I have won awards for my paintings in competitions throughout the
United States since my first exhibit. I also earned signature
membership in the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania
Watercolor Society, the Louisiana Watercolor Society and Potomac Valley
Watercolorists. I served as president of the Baltimore Watercolor
Society for four years and on the Board for ten years.
Personnel from the Baltimore Sun Newspapers saw my work in one
of the galleries where I exhibit and asked me to illustrate the covers
of a magazine they print five times annually. I have been doing
them since 2001. Representatives from MIT (Massachusetts
Institute of Technology) saw my work on my Web page and asked if they
could use it on one of their environmental textbooks.
I was also lucky enough to be asked to teach painting, which I did in
nursing homes and Senior centers and eventually in my home studio in
Ellicott City, Maryland, starting in 1989.
I am constantly pushing to learn more and sharing my knowledge with
anyone who is interested. My work is intended to reflect the
beauty I see around me, both in my community and the places I
visit. I often will do paintings and etchings of the same
subject. As one can see, I have been offered so many
opportunities that continue to convince me that I am on the right path.
