Born in 1856, Amelia Montague Watson studied under the tonalist painter Dwight William Tryon. By the age of twenty-three she was already supporting herself with her watercolors. By the 1890's, she was garnering critical acclaim.
She maintained homes and studios in Tryon, North Carolina, Martha's Vineyard, and Connecticut and regularly hosted luminaries such as Harriett Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, and the artist Helen Hyde. She traveled widely from New Orleans to Florida to Canada. She (showing 500 of 710 characters). |
