Born in Salem, MA on June 15, 1818. West was a marine and ship painter who was active in San Francisco in the 1850s. Due to extreme poverty, he committed suicide in Fremont, CA on April 6, 1854. In: Essex Inst.; Peabody Museum (whaling scene).
