This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Brian Wall, known for his constructivist and minimal abstract steel sculptures ranging in size from large scale to small, was born on September 5, 1931 in London, England. Wall studied at Luton College of Art and embarked on his artistic career after serving in the Royal Air Force. In 1954, he moved to St. Ives, Cornwall where he was an assistant to sculptor, Barbara Hepworth. She and the circle of artists living in St. Ives, had a major influence on the direction of Wall's work as did Cesar and Brancusi, whom he met on trips to Paris.

In 1959 Wall returned to London and began to teach at Ealing College of Art, Middlesex, and then at Central School of Art & Design, from 1962 - 1972, where served as chairman of the Sculpture Department. Wall's first solo exhibition in 1957 was at School of Architecture, London, followed by numerous shows at London galleries.

In 1969 Wall left Britain for California where he became a U.S. citizen and joined the faculty of the Department of Art at University of California, Berkeley and remained a Professor of Art until 1994. Wall's primary sculpture studio is in Oakland, CA and he divides his time between his homes in San Francisco, California and Posolles, France.

His work has been reviewed and written about in the New York Times by Hilton Kramer and John Russell and exhibited at museums internationally including The Tate, The Seattle Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and many others.

Biography from Triton Museum of Art:
Brian Wall was born in 1931 in London, England. He first studied at Luton Art School and took jobs as a glass-blower. At age 23, he moved to the famous artists' colony of St. Ives, Cornwall on the British Isles. It was there that he worked as Barbara Hepworth's assistant for several years. Wall's earliest, free-standing wood sculptures were primarily influenced by Mondrian's paintings. He then adopted steel as his medium of shoice to create variations of earlier planar, Constructivist work.

In 1962, he began teaching sculpture at the Central School of Art and Design (now Central St. Martins) in London. He moved to California in 1972 to continue his art career. He was given a retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1983. His work is represented in public collections throughout the United States, Great Britain, and Australia.

His teaching assignment include 1961-62 Ealing College of Art, Middlesex, England; 1962-72 Central School of Art & Design; and 1969-92 University of California, Berkeley.
