Born in Erie, PA on Feb. 20, 1852. Following graduation from West Point in 1874, Wood fought in several Indian campaigns (one was against Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé) and explored the Yukon and Alaska. Upon resignation of his military commission, he studied law at Columbia University. By 1884 he had moved to Portland, OR where he practiced law until 1919.
