"A Moravian artist who achieved recognition beyond the religious community was Christian Daniel Welfare (Wohlfahrt) (1796-1841) from Salem [NC]." 

Source: Robert Bishop: Folk Painters of America (E. P. Dutton, New York, 1979), pp. 160, 162-163; including a black & white illustration of a portrait he painted.
