This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A native of the Pittsburgh area, he remained loyal to the region. He became a self-taught impressionist painter of Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio landscapes. He had no formal training and little travel, but studied art exhibitions that came through his native Pittsburgh. The first exhibition of his work was at the Premiere Carnegie International Exhibition in 1896. There he was a key figure in the art world, heading the 1936 Federal Art Project and helping to found the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. Close friend, George Luks, was a major influence.
