Although Cora Kelly Ward was born and raised in the small town of Eunice, Louisiana, her interest in art led her to the progressive Newcombe College for Women (New Orleans) and thereafter to the vanguard liberal arts school of Black Mountain College*, North Carolina (extant 1933-1957). Black Mountain College employed ideas of the influential educational reformer John Dewy (1859-1952) and elements of Bauhaus* methodology.
