This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Donald Harper Works was born in Huron, SD on April 4, 1897.  Works moved with his family to Minnesota as a child and resided in Minneapolis and St Paul.  After attending Shattock Military School, he majored in architecture at Minnesota University and served in WWI.  He worked as an architect in St Louis before settling in San Francisco in the 1920s.

While studying art at the California School of Fine Art, he worked for architect Julia Morgan.  In 1928 he traveled to New York where he was assistant to James M. Hewlett on the murals for the Bank of New York and Manhattan.  Returning to San Francisco in 1929, he established the Art Center and shared studios with Jacques Schnier and Rinaldo Cuneo. In 1933 he and his wife Katherine moved across the bay to San Anselmo where he remained until his death on July 20, 1949.  Although an architect by profession, in his leisure he painted landscapes, industrial scenes, and waterfront activities.
