"On Dorothy Wackerman: Memorial Dorothy W. Hutton"
Friend of The Philadelphia Sketch Club, member of The Plastic Club, and my grandmother Dorothy Wackerman Hutton passed away on September 13, 2001. She was 102 years old and has many accolades to fill each and every one of those wonderful years. A brief paragraph follows from her obituary:
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts in 1922. She studied with Andre L'Hote in Paris and Earl Horterand Hobson Pitmans in Philadelphia.
During the 1920s, she worked as a freelance artist in New York with her husband, Hugh M. Hutton (and Sketch Club member). In 1940, she joined The Plastic Club and went on to being a member with the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Print Club and the Narberth Group for Creative Arts and was a signature member of the Philadelphia Water ColorSociety.
Her works are part of the permanent collections at the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, the Richmond Art Museum, Harvard Art Gallery and the Philadelphia Public Library. Winning a competition, she was selected to design a wall hanging for the War MemorialChapel of the National Cathedral
