Francis William Edmonds, an early specialist in genre painting, was born in Hudson, New York in 1806. Edmonds began as a banker in New York City and while keeping this as his primary career he began a second in art. E.F. Williams was the pseudonym he used at first to uphold his image as a respectable and dependable banker.

The majority of his paintings are scenes of rural everyday life, often with humorous overtones, he also painted literary subjects, portraits and landscapes. These typif (showing 500 of 1771 characters).
