Eola Willis
One of Charleston, South Carolina’s “principal local artists” (Gerdts, 1990, vol. 2, p. 56), Eola Willis was born in Dalton, Georgia in 1856. She studied at the Art Students League under a Mrs. J. S. D. Smillie (others identify her as Helen Smillie (1854-1926), wife of George Henry Smillie), William Merritt Chase, and Rhoda Holmes Nicholls (1854-1938), a superb watercolor painter associated with Chase.
