Biography from AskART:
Ernest Wilmeth II was born in 1952 in Perryton, Texas. His interest in art was first kindled in his late teens after his family took a weekend trip to Santa Fe, NM. During a tour of an art gallery his imagination was captured by an R. Farrington Elwell painting that showed Sitting Bull and his tribe returning home after defeating Custer. Over the years, the memory of that painting kept encouraging him to become an artist.

By the time Wilmeth was 21 years old and attending Western Texas State University, he decided to switch from a business major to art. Wilmeth's major influence at WTSU was Dr. Emilio Caballero, an enthusiastic art teacher who made art classes a joy to attend. (Other influences include Paul Cezanne, Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Ruth Duckworth, Edward Hopper, and Robert Rauschenberg.)

Wilmeth then enrolled in a Cloudcroft, NM summer school that had a series of two-week art classes. Soon after, he left Texas and enrolled at Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff) where he earned a BFA in 1976.

After graduation, Wilmeth moved back to Texas for three years before he was drawn to New Mexico. He felt the climate for artists in New Mexico was more favorableand New Mexico's renowned landscape and quality of light were additional inducements. Moving to Albuquerque in 1980, he continued to paint traditional landscapes, still lifes, and nudes, which were featured in a number of local art venues.

Before long, Wilmeth decided to take a clay class from Penny Roberts and wound up studying with her for three years. By 1982, he was creating his signature smoke-fired clay vessels and worked in clay exclusively for the next ten years before tapering off somewhat in 1992.

He started experimenting with collages in 1995, but didn't publicly unveil his new style of work until the following year. Since then his collages have earned several awards and have been featured in many shows.

Wilmeth's original collages are made with torn handmade and commercial papers overlaid on a foundation of acrylic underpaint on paper or canvas. His collages frequently exhibit simple oriental compositionsechoing his belief that "less is more."

In 2000, Wilmeth embarked upon a series of paintings with acrylic black backgrounds overlaid with simple, geometric forms made from copper, silver, and gold leaf.
