Francis West used to live in Jamestown, Rhode Island, and his studio there was called Red Elephant Studio. He painted land-and water scenes, tall sailing ships as well as Native Amerian chiefs. He also painted murals in the Jamestown and Newport areas.
He was born Francis X. Polusney on February 3, 1881. The Jamestown directory of 1915 lists his profession as "Ordinance Man", and as "artist" in 1936.
West died August 27, 1971.
