| A sculptor and art educator, Gurdon Woods was born in Savannah, Georgia and attended the Art Students League in New York City. During World War II, he served in the armed forces. In 1955, he became Director of the California School of Fine Arts, and eleven years later founded the fine arts department at the University of California at Santa Cruz. In 1974, he became director of the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. In the 1980s, he retired to focus on his artwork.
