| Emmanuel SANDELIUS ( -- c1845). Watercolorist. Born in Sweden.
Sandelius was the bastard son of King Charles XIII and called himself the "King's Orphan." He traveled under the name Gustave M. WASEURTZ and was active on the East Coast, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia, before coming to California where he made made shorthand pen and ink sketches of missions and settlements. In 1842 he did some of the earliest drawings and paintings of southern California. He died of tuberculosis in New Orleans about 1845.
