| Born in Centerville, CA on Oct. 6, 1905. Helen Wills was considered the model of the wholesome American girl in her youth. A great beauty and champion tennis player, she won the U.S. Single's championship while still in high school. At UC she was a pupil of Eugen Neuhaus and continued her art studies at the CSFA. For many years Helen was the protegée of Senator James Phelan who commissioned Helen's portrait by sculptor Haig Patigian which he then donated to the CPLH.
