This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Centre, Alabama, Hugh Williams received his B.A.A. in Applied Art from Auburn University, M.A. in Art from Columbia University and did additional study at John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis and Columbia University. He joined the Auburn University Art faculty in 1957 and was named Alumni Professor of Art in 1987, the only professor to be so honored to date.

William's work is in the permanent collection of the The High Museum of Art in Atlanta; Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus, GA; Columbia University Art Gallery; Montgomery Museum of Art, Alabama; Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabma, Fine Arts Museum of the South Mobile, and others.

Awards include Charles Burchfield Memorial Award of the American Watercolor Society, National Academy of Design and A. T. Atwater, Jr. Award at the Society of Four Arts of Palm Beach. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society. The Mississippi Arts Association has established a scholarship in his name.
