This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born 1922 in Auburn, Indiana, Hugh Wiley is an oil painter in abstract style. He has also been an art educator and muralist, having completed 19 murals with commissions in Mexico City; New York City; Philadelphia; Washington DC.; Hartford, Conntecticut; Newark, New Jersey; and Oakland and Willits, California.

He began painting seriously at the age of ten. After graduating from high school in Auburn, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He served in the army until March 1945 when he was seriously injured in combat. After a year of rehabilitation, he returned to his studies in Philadelphia and New York, followed by study at the National School of Painting and Sculpture in Mexico City.

Upon returning to New York, his work was represented by the Bertha Schaeffer Gallery, and he taught at the Philadelphia College of Art. In 1964, he moved to the San Francisco Bay area to work on a commission for the Hartford Insurance
Company headquarters. Until 1984, he taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts, leading an environmental studies program as well as teaching watercolor, and drawing.

In 1984, Hugh Wiley retired to Mendocino County, where he and his wife Elizabeth built a home and studio. He continues working, inspired by nature and philosophy in watercolor and ferro concrete, which reference reality and the spiritual.
