This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Longtime director of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, he painted part time during that tenure and then devoted full time to the activity he has pursued since he was nine years old. An early inspiration was his teacher in Santa Barbara, Joseph Knowles, from whom he took lessons through high school.

He was born in Hawaii. His formal education was in architecture and industrial design, which he studied at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard and at the University of California at Los Angeles. He spent four years in the Navy and then worked in industrial and package design in New York City and did exhibition and graphic design at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and later the Brooklyn Museum, where he designed the Frieda Schiff Warburg Memorial Sculpture Garden.

At the Brooklyn Museum, he took the "Wednesday Evening Class," run by David Levine, whose caricatures appear in the New York Review of books, and Aaron Shikler, whose portrait of Jackie Kennedy hangs in the White House.

White credits Thomas Buechner, his boss and the Director of the Brooklyn Museum, as being the person who exerted the strongest influence on him. Both took to full-time painting after retirement and have painted together in Rome, many locales in California, and upstate New York where Buechner has a studio.
