This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Jefferson Stephen Ward (1876-1949) was born in St Joseph, Missouri on April 4, 1876. He studied with Nicholas Brewer, and with Maurice Braun in San Diego.  During the 1920s, he lived in Glendale, California where he opened an art gallery with his son Thurlow Ward.   By the early 1930s the elder Ward was in Jacksonville, Oregon but soon returned to Los Angeles where he died on July 22, 1949.

Member: California Art Club; Artland Club (Los Angeles); Painters & Sculptors of Los Angeles; Glendale Art Ass'n.

Exhibited: Arizona State Fair (Phoenix), 1923 (honorable mention); Witte Museum (San Antonio), 1929 (honorable mention); Oregon State Fair, 1930.

Works held: Fairfax High School (Hollywood).

The following was submitted in March of 2006 by his granddaughter Judi Page:

My Grandfather, Jefferson Stephen Ward died on July 22, 1949.

I own a number of his paintings including several that were painted on the cutouts of toilet seats.  During the depression my father, John Winters, worked in a toilet seat factory and brought home the round cutouts.  He then routed them making frame and canvas (wood) out of one single piece.  These were then painted by grandfather.
