This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in England on June 24, 1817 into an aristocratic family, the Earls of Wandesforde, Juan Wandesford,  when quite young, became a pupil of English watercolorist John Varley and later of Le Capelaine.  He taught drawing at Glasgow Collegiate Academy before immigrating to New York in 1850.

There he was one of the earliest members of the Century Club, exhibited oils and watercolors at the National Academy of Design, and developed a fine reputation for his miniatures and portraits of prominent citizens.

In the late 1850s he traveled to Montreal, Canada to paint the portrait of the visiting Prince of Wales and lived in Montreal until settling in San Francisco in 1862.  Locally, he was employed mainly with portrait commissions and teaching before concentrating on the local landscape.

Working in both watercolor and oil, he made sketching trips to the Trinity Mountains, the Monterey Peninsula, Clear Lake, and the Sierra Nevada.  In the early 1890s, he moved across the bay to Hayward where he spent his remaining years.  After his home burned taking with it much of his life's work, he lived in declining health until his death on Nov. 15, 1902.

As well as landscapes of California, he also painted a few portraits and still lifes. His style was a fusion of the Hudson River and English schools of painting.  Examples of his work are rare.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Juan Wandesforde was best known as a California mountain landscape painter. Wandesforde was born in England to an aristocratic family in 1817 where he remained for most of his youth.  He studied art in England under John Varley, a famous English watercolorist, and started his career as a portrait painter working mainly on commissioned pieces and teaching.  He also taught drawing at the Glasgow Collegiate Academy.

In 1850, he immigrated to the United States settling in New York City where he exhibited his paintings at the National Academy of Design and became one of the first members of the Century Club.  His reputation at that time was for miniatures and portrait painting.

He traveled to Canada for commission work before relocating to San Francisco in 1862.  While living in California, he took numerous painting trips to the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Monterey coast where he made landscape sketches.

In the early 1870s a group of prominent artists, including landscapists Thomas Hill and William Keith, gathered at Wandesforde's home to form the San Francisco Art Association.  The Association held semiannual exhibitions often featuring local artists, including Wandesforde.  He eventually moved across the San Francisco Bay to Hayward in the 1890s where he spent the rest of his life.  Much of his artwork was destroyed along with his home in a fire.  He died in 1902.
