Jian Wang was born in 1958 in the westernized city of Dalian in the north east of China. As a child he was one of six selected to create movie posters for propaganda films which he worked on at the Youth Palace of Art after school.
As there was no art college in Dalian he chose to study engineering and he eventually became a successful professor of engineering though he continued to paint in his spare time.
